Stylish with its own fresh country feel, Bartinney Wine and Champagne Bar in De Oude Bank offers visitors a taste of Bartinney wine farm, but on the tree lined streets of central Stellenbosch. The boutique wine cellar, located on the Helshoogte Pass, brings their wines, bubblies and selection of French Champagne to the heart of Stellies in a sophisticated yet relaxed environment – perfect for a glass of wine after work, no special occasion required.
The interior has an old world feel, with heavy leather couches, dark wood panelling and an exquisite chandelier made from old vines that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a different century. With added modern touches and a terrace overlooking the bustle of Bird Street, it has its own European feel without losing local pride and small town charm.
It’s the ideal setting to familiarise yourself with the estate’s three main cultivars. The boutique private cellar produces a fresh Sauvignon Blanc, rich yet fruity Chardonnay and smashable Cabernet Sauvignon. Purchase one of these three by the glass, by the bottle, or the case if you so wish. I of course fancied up to a glass of Brut Savage Méthode Cap Classique instead (R35/R140). We also tucked into a reasonably priced but satisfying cheese platter (R40), but olives, biltong and charcuterie are also available, all sourced locally of course.
Imported Champagnes are available for the more glamorous occasions, but ideally it’s a relaxed environment to sip a few with friends (and design that’s totally ogle worthy). Whether indoors on the cooler evenings or on the terrace for balmy days, it’s a Stellies favourite that merits a visit. Trust us.
